The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) has been allocated an Access & Success Fund of £35,000 by the Central University Access & Success Team to support suitable projects and initiatives during the 2025–26 academic year. This funding is available on a competitive basis for projects that align with the University’s Access and Participation Plan 2025–28.
During the past year, Teaching Learning and Delivery through a Programme Development Working Group, have undertaken a review of the programme development processes for programme amendments and programme withdrawal/suspensions. Following approval of these changes by the Teaching Learning Student Committee in September 2025, new guidance and documentation are now available.
This initiative is designed to elevate the quality, accessibility, and impact of asynchronous learning materials, supporting flexible and blended learning across programmes. By partnering with the eLearning team, academics can co-create engaging, inclusive, and high-quality digital content that meets the evolving needs of diverse learners.
Scheduling the timetables for the 2025-26 academic year is now underway. Progress for timetables that are in progress can be tracked through links and discussed in weekly meetings.
The 2025–26 TAA application form is now open. Staff who had a 2024–25 TAA must reapply, as arrangements do not carry forward. The deadline for applications is Friday 14 March 2025.
We are delighted to announce that Professor Colin Steele has been appointed as the new Discipline Head of Education (DHoE) for the Foundation Studies Programme from 1st August 2024 for a period of three years. Colin takes over from Dr Jonathan Sly, who has held the DHoE role for the past 5 years.
Dr Jo Cartwright has also been appointed as Head of Foundation Studies from 1st August 2024. Jo takes over from Professor Andy Weightman.

The responses to our survey of Undergraduate offer-holders in the 2024 cycle have been published. The most influential factors in declining an offer at UoM are consistent with 2023: the quality of our accommodation, high entry requirements, and our reputation.
An example of good practice that Teaching Academy is championing is the use of Mid-Semester Surveys across your course units. This simple check-in with students can reveal aspects of their learning students are enjoying and, most importantly, highlight any issues that could be a very simple fix, asking these questions in the middle of the survey gives you an opportunity to act on that feedback and improve the student experience.
