Celebrating FSE success at the SU Academic Awards 2026

The Faculty of Science and Engineering celebrated another year of success at the 2026 Students’ Union Academic Awards, with FSE staff and students recognised across a range of categories for their outstanding contributions to teaching, student voice, academic community and student support. The awards highlight the people and partnerships making a real difference to the student experience.
Commitment to Student Voice
Alejandra Vicente Colmenares (Department of Mathematics) was highly commended in the Commitment to Student Voice category, recognising her dedication to ensuring students are heard and represented.
Outstanding Student-Staff Partnership
Lei Zeng (Department of Materials) was highly commended for Outstanding Student-Staff Partnership, celebrating the impact of collaboration between students and staff in strengthening learning, engagement and community.
Academic Rep of the Year
Abdelrahman Shaaban was named Faculty of Science and Engineering Academic Rep of the Year, recognising his outstanding work representing students and helping to improve the academic experience. Matthew Dalgliesh and Yuxin Yan were also highly commended in this category.
Postgraduate Research Academic Rep of the Year
Christian Nwosu was named Postgraduate Research Academic Rep of the Year, celebrating his exceptional contribution to representing and supporting postgraduate research students. Md Faisal Mahmud was also highly commended in this category.
Outstanding Academic Advisor
Danny Dresner (Department of Computer Science) was highly commended for Outstanding Academic Advisor, recognising his commitment to supporting students through guidance, encouragement and academic advice.
Excellence in Teaching Practice
Abdullatif Alfutimie (Department Chemical Engineering) was highly commended for Excellence in Teaching Practice, celebrating his contribution to high-quality, engaging and effective teaching.
Outstanding PGR Supervisor
Abbie Jones (Department or Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) and Michele Caprio (Department of Computer Science) were both highly commended in the Outstanding PGR Supervisor category, recognising their supportive supervision and the positive impact they have on postgraduate researchers.
Excellence in Embedding Employability in the Curriculum
Duncan Hull (Department of Computer Science) won the award for Excellence in Embedding Employability in the Curriculum. This award recognises his work to connect students’ learning with future career opportunities, helping them develop the skills, confidence and experience needed beyond their studies.
